The Sweet Spot: How Ice Cream Month Can Deepen Your Intimacy

By Erin Alexander, Clinical Sexologist

July is the heart of summer and with it comes National Ice Cream Month and National Picnic Month. While these celebrations may seem lighthearted, they offer a wonderful reminder of something we often overlook: intimacy grows through shared moments of joy, playfulness, and presence.

In our busy, goal-oriented lives, it’s easy to forget that meaningful connection doesn’t always come from grand romantic gestures or deep emotional conversations. Sometimes, it’s found in the simplest experiences sharing an ice cream cone, laughing over melting scoops, or enjoying an afternoon picnic together.

Ice cream is the perfect symbol of playful intimacy. It’s messy, sensory, and encourages us to slow down, engage our senses, and embrace the moment without taking ourselves too seriously.

The Intimacy of Shared Pleasure

Sharing food has long been a way humans connect. Enjoying something as simple as ice cream creates opportunities for laughter, conversation, and presence. It asks us to let go of perfection, be comfortable with a little mess, and enjoy the experience together.

This month, use the simple pleasure of a frozen treat as an opportunity to strengthen your connection, with a partner, with friends, or with yourself.

1. Create a Sensory Sundae Date (For Couples)

Instead of grabbing a pint and watching TV, turn dessert into an experience.

Make It Collaborative

Visit a specialty grocery or candy shop together and choose several toppings you’ve never tried before. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s making decisions together and enjoying the process.

Engage Your Senses

Focus on touch, taste, and curiosity. Try a playful taste test by sampling different flavors or feeding each other small bites while describing the flavors, textures, and temperatures.

Add Something New

Introduce a little novelty by blindfolding one partner during a flavor guessing game. Exploring something unfamiliar together creates shared memories and often leads to plenty of laughter.

2. Practice Mindful Tasting (For Yourself)

Intimacy also includes the relationship you have with yourself.

Ice cream can become a simple mindfulness exercise that encourages you to slow down and reconnect with your body.

Be Present

Sit somewhere quiet and take your first few bites slowly. Notice the temperature, texture, aroma, and flavor without distractions.

Discover Your Preferences

Choose a flavor you wouldn’t normally order. Pay attention to how it makes you feel. Do you enjoy trying something adventurous, or does your favorite comfort flavor bring you the most satisfaction?

Embrace Self-Care

Afterward, take a few deep breaths and simply appreciate the moment. Pleasure doesn’t always need to be productive—sometimes enjoying something because it brings you joy is reason enough.

3. Picnic & Play (For Friends and Family)

National Picnic Month is the perfect excuse to spend time outdoors with people you care about.

Encourage Conversation

Bring conversation starters or play games like Two Truths and a Lie with relationship or life-themed questions to spark meaningful discussion.

Keep It Playful

Host a fun “Ice Cream Sculpture Contest” using simple ingredients. Creativity and laughter naturally build connection.

Share the Experience

Invite everyone to contribute something different, drinks, snacks, sandwiches, or dessert. Shared responsibility helps create a stronger sense of community and belonging.

Slow Down and Savor the Moment

Whether you’re sharing a cone with someone you love, enjoying a quiet scoop alone, or laughing with friends at a picnic, intimacy often grows through ordinary moments that we choose to fully experience.

This July, give yourself permission to slow down, be present, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Sometimes the sweetest connections begin with something as simple as sharing dessert.
